GET A CAT A BIB?

Post  Desert Fire on Wed Aug 26, 2009 11:01 pm

In my current East Vally Wildlife Newsletter called BIRD TRACKS, was an interesting little write up called:

Want To Prevent A Cat From Catching Birds?
Get a Cat Bib!

Cat Goods Inc. has for sale a soft neoprene bib that attaches to a cat's collar by means of a Velcro closure tab. The bib works by slightly interfering with a cat's ability to pounce; this gives a bird just enough time to escape. Independent testing by the University of Perth in Australia proved that the bib is quite effective in reducing predation on birds by cats. Machine washable, the bib retails for about $10.00 at www.catgoods.com (written by Paul Halesworth, an East Valley rehabber)

Mmmmm, interesting...I have no way to test this as my cats do not go outside...

It seems worth trying out. I have ordered two of different sizes for my daughter. One of her cats goes after the little birds who land in the garden. She has been able to get them of his mouth still unhurt but last week she was very upset because the cat brought into the house a dead sparrow. She has 4 cats and they are very well fed. The cat in question chases the birds for the fun of it. She would need Phil for a while to tell this cat what is what. In the meantime we'll try the bib and see if it really works. Thanks Shi. Thanks, Gladys! I will be VERY interested to see if this works! I'm sure the cat(s) won't appreciate "wearing" a bib, but if the concept works...all the better!

Some cats (many times the females) are outstanding hunters, whether they are well fed or not. These are the ones that need the bib.

Sometimes it's pathetic to see a cat stalking a bird. All that long instense concentration...slow creep forward...GO FOR IT!! AND, the bird flies away - leaving US cheering and the cat in an embarrassed snit!

I read that cats usually catch birds that are young, sick or stupid, or don't know about cats as predators. Personally, I think a lot depends on the bird AND the cat!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the title of this thread...I just jokingly mentioned this afternoon to Jude before logging on that our Horace needs a bib since he has problems with his co-ordination when eating and drinking due to his disability. He manages, but ends up with dry cat pellets all over himself in the process. I think he spills more than he manages to actually eat poor cat. Wink

I know your topic has nothing to do with eating, but what are the chances of us talking about such an unusual subject ( in different contexts) in the space of a few days? I have been away since Thursday morning and just got this post tonight.

On the bird-catching deterent.....nice idea!

The Cats I have known would probably enjoy this Bib about as much as being held at arm's length over a Swimming Pool...

Lol...

But...no doubt it would give the Birds an edge...!

Shi, Will have to wait until I get to Montevideo. This year we are travelling a bit earlier (24th october instead of first week in november). Will keep you informed on the results. Wish us good luck. Gladys.

Consider GOOD LUCK wished, Gladys! Haven't actually heard of anyone using these bibs, so I will be very interested to see if they work!

Yes, Phil...knowing how cats don't like extra bling or anything else for that matter,on their sleek bodies, they probably would not be happy! BUT, for those souls who still (for shame!) let their pet cats out and about...AND, said cats are critter hunters, especially birds, well...they need the bib!

Just saw this thread. Interesting idea. I bet it would work--assuming that the cat would tollerate it.
I also thought it would be worth mentioning that anyone using something like that should make sure that their cat is wearing a safety collar. That's a lot of extra material that could get caught on something and if the cat isn't wearing a safety collar I would think that it could increase their risk of injury.

EXCELLENT POINT, CJ! cheers

Also, I wonder if that bib could be made with a "stretchy" type "collar"...

Hey there, Gladys...was the bib ever used? If so, did it work??
