    Pigeon Potty Training?

Post  olayak on Tue Mar 24, 2009 1:35 pm

Has anyone been able to "potty train" their pigeon? I know that they do it with Parrots (http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww71eii.htm) but I was wondering if anyone has successfully trained a pigeon to poop in one spot. It would be awesome if that worked! I'm not worthy
I know that pigeons are smart enough to learn something like this. The questions is whether they want to learn! Smile

Well, I have heard that some people have trained their pigeons to use the trash can or newspaper on the floor but I've never tried it. The closest we come to anything like that is when a hen is in our home for whatever reason with her mate, lays eggs and we take her out of the cage to let her poop. We have one doing that now and I'm not sure whether she would do it if she had full run of the house.

LOL, it sure would be nice. Very Happy

My husband has talked about a pigeon he had as a kid that would fly to a newspaper and poop..........I would think that it would be VERY time consuming to train a pigeon. They poop LOTS of times a day, so you would have to catch them every 15 or 20 minutes and take them to where ever you wanted them to go.............not like a dog or cat that only goes a few times a day.

A few may be able to be trained, especially if one is a "pigeon whisperer."

However, if your pigeon has the run of the house, your next best bet, if you are not into "pigeon poop pick-up exercises," would be to get a diaper.

A lady who custom makes pigeon diapers, is Boni. Her address is www.birdwearlady@hotmail.com

Squeaks has two of her diapers and they work great!

Two pigeon babies born in my balcony continued to poop on the plastic sheet I placed under their nest, even after they left the nest and walked all over the balcony. Later on when they started to fly and would come back to the balcony for meals and to sleep they still kept using the plastic sheets as their toilet, something their parents never did. I never tried to train them, I just changed the plastic sheet for them. I didn't have the same results with other babies, it shows they have different personalities, of course. It also shows that they could be trained since they are capable of accepting the notion, or not? Gladys
