Video - Infraorbital abscess in a parrot

Post  Brad on Thu Mar 26, 2009 3:17 pm

    Hi Folks,

Just a warning that this video contains graphic operating images that not all may be comfortable with. However, I found this channel on YouTube and thought it was very informative and educational.

Here we see an operation on what looks to be an amazon parrot to remove an infraorbital abscess. The operation was a success and the outcome was good in the end. Smile

Check out the channel for Street Road Animal Hospital: http://www.youtube.com/user/StreetRoadAnimal

Ooooh that looked heavily infected and painful! I see many surgical procedures every day at work, but even I was screwing up my face watching this one! Shocked Blood and 'gore' doesn't bother me, but I don't 'do' abscesses/infected wounds etc. That's when I usually need to take a seat!! pale Faints Interesting and informative all the same. I'm so glad this poor bird was fine post-operatively. Very Happy

Oooooh, sorry Brad, just can't make myself watch it......yet.

I'll have to get up my courage. I'm not too thrilled with watching surgical procedures anyway, but like Lindy feels....

abscesses.......Ewwww! Think I'd have to sit down too.

But, this is good to have here for educational purposes if (god forbid) any of us needs info on this problem.

    Thanks for posting it.

I made myself watch it. What a marvellous operation!! And how they succeed in applying the right dose of anesthesia to a little critter like that!!?? The tumor seemed enormous but they didn't say the nature of it. It looks as if they cleaned it all out. He is a lucky parrot Yes, I hope nobody will ever need to refer to it but it is a good thing to know that such operation is possible and what it is all about. Thank you Brad. Gladys

That wasn't hard to watch. Looks like the tumor was encapsulated to a certain extent and he just took out chunks of it. I thought the surgeon was a bit rough at times though. What surprised me was there was so little blood.

I have seen stuff just as gory so I guess that is why it didn't bother me too much plus our vet has let me watch her do stuff. Now, if there had been a whole lot of pus and blood that may be a different story.

    Hi Maggie Very Happy

You have a stronger stomach than you think because all that 'stuff' the vet scooped out was pus...just in a more solid form! pale That makes me feel even more queasy than seeing oozing pus. Faints This wasn't a tumour fortunately. After watching this video a second time, I do agree with you about the heavy-handedness of the surgeon.

The whole solid pus thing reminds me of my poor cockatiel Rosie who had an inoperable wing tumour that was continually infected despite antibiotic treatment and regular washouts. Brings back very painful memories. Sad

LOL, Lindi, the solid pus doesn't bother me, but the runny kind definitely does!

Well, I just clicked the link and ended up watching it. I suppose with some of the pigeons I've rescued, I've seen things that look just as painful, so the graphicness didn't bother me too much. Still, it's a bit different seeing that on an operating table instead of the sidewalk Faints

Glad the little guy made it! Anesthesia on a bird is quite a sensitive process; many of them don't make it for that reason alone.

Gald I didn't know a lot of negatives about anesthesia when Squeaks' wing was healing! He had to have TWO surgeries!! cheers

While I worked for a Vet for 7 years before moving to AZ, he wasn't an Avian Vet and we didn't operate on birds. I did assist with many surgeries tho, so blood and gore don't usually bother me (with the possible exception of my own! pale ).
