    I can't find Baytril

Post  EgypSwiftLady on Thu Mar 26, 2009 9:00 pm

I need to replenish my Baytril but Foys doesn't carry it any longer and I can't seem to fins it on Siegels ( I hate their site catalog!)

Anybody know where I can get some without spending a $100.00 ?

    Thanks Very Happy

    Hi Robin,

I remember Terry mentioning in the past that she orders cipro, which is the generic version of baytril. I think she got it from Mexico so perhaps you could search for this drug? It was supposedly much cheaper too.

I dont how much my opinion is worth on this; for the simple fact I do not medicate very much, but I do from time to time. Well because I dont medicate and I can be a real idiot a lot of the time. Razz Anyways, I use a product called Pegosan which is manufactured by the pego company of Germany. It comes in pill and powder forms. I always get the pill form because I do not like medications in the waterer. My theory on the subject is that if You treat every bird with the medication, and you bleach the waterers every time you empty them (switching out waterers twice a day. Like an AM and a PM waterer. This lets them sit and sterilize between having water in them.) that you can knock any disease in a matter of a few days. Its my opinion, after doing both types; that the pills forms are much more effective. This, and every bird get the same dosage. With powder meds, It depends on how hot it is and how much water your birds are drinking and to truly medicate with the right about; a lot of math is involved. I've never had baytril before so I cant tell you how they compare, effictiveness-wise. But if I ever have a slight cocci problem, or even a crop slime problem; Just one pill of this will knock what ever your bird has, every time. (Or atleast it has for me.)

And I dont think its over priced at all, not for something that works as well as it does. But that is my opinion on things. Though again, What else do I have to offer but my opinion?

Thank you Matt! Everyone's opinion is valuable, including yours. If we don't agree with what someone says it is still respected as an opinion.

Cipro's actually a human drug where Baytril's a veterinary equivalent, although a different molecule: Ciprofloxacin vs. Enrofloxacin. When metabolized by the liver, about 40% of Enrofloxacin is converted to Ciprofloxacin, which is considered an equally strong metabolite. The laws governing the use of Enrofloxacin for commercial livestock and poultry use have changed to drastically restrict its (Baytril) use so as to prevent the widespread proliferation of Fluoroquinolone-resistant pathogenic bacteria. In short, they're trying to protect us by taking Baytril off the non-veterinary market. That's why most of the pigeon supply houses can't get it anymore.

Thanks Matt Very Happy I'm very interested in everyone opinion. cheers

The only time I medicate in the water is vitamins, I always worry if the individual bird got enough of the meds. I prefer to give each one their own dose, and if I see one pij that looks iffy I grab it and put it in isolation to watch.

I'll order some of the Pegosan tablets to keep on hand.
