I believe I saved this from PT back in 2007, but don't remember the circumstances. Thought everyone might enjoy!

Adapted from the poem ''TO ALL PARENTS''
by Edgar A Guest [1881-1959]
I will lend you for a while a feathered friend, God said,
For you to love while it lives, and mourn when it is dead.
Maybe for 12 or 14 years, or maybe 2 or 3
But will you, 'till I call it back, take care of it for me?
It will bring its charms to gladden you, and should its stay be brief,
You'll always have the memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise it will stay, since all from earth return
But there are lessons taught below I want this bird to learn.
I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.
Now will you give it all your love, nor think the labor vain?
Nor hate me when I come to take my little bird home again?
And my heart replied, ''My Lord, Thy Will Be Done.''
For all the joys this bird will bring, the risk of grief I'll run.
I'll shelter it with tenderness, I'll love it while I may,
And for the happiness that I've known, forever grateful stay.
But should you call it back much sooner then I planned,
I'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.
If by my love I've managed your wishes to achieve,
In memory of its dear sweet love, please help me while I grieve.
When my cherished feathered friend departs this world of strife,
Please send yet another needy soul for me to love all its life.
