    Pigeons can so remember

Post  Maggie on Sun May 24, 2009 11:10 am

Many of you may remember our little girl "JimmyJack". We took her in over three years ago as a young baby/fledgling. It was already cold weather so she spent the winter with us. She became extremely tame and would play a game with Lewis every afternoon where she would fly to his knee, then jump on the kitchen table and slide. We would clap and tell her what a good girl she was. She would do this over and over.

When the weather got warmer we moved her to the "keeper" aviary. No way could we ever release this little girl. We brought her back in the house fairly often and she would pick right up with her in- house routine.

We got in a huge king that we named (wrongly as it turned out) Crystal. Crystal turned out to be a boy and he and JimmyJack paired up so we stopped bringing her in so she wouldn't be confused between us. It has probably been nearly a year since we had her in the house.

Crystal got sick - still don't know the problem - but, we had to bring him in a few days ago. He simply cannot fly so we are treating him for the usual things and is showing a bit of improvement.

Lewis brought JJ back in the house this morning to visit Crystal just so she would know he is still around. She immediately flew to the top of the refrigerator and "her" basket. Lewis sat down at the table, patted his knee and she flew down, cocked her head at him and jumped on the table, doing her "slide". She did it over and over just like always.

Sure brought a lump to my throat..

Maggie thank you for sharing that cheers It made me smile. JJ is certainly a very sweet girl and sounds like she's very happy to be back for a visit.

My hubby & I can't understand why so many people don't realize just how smart pigeons are Sad If they would just give pigeons a chance people would be so surprised at their intelligence.

We are amazed everyday. Very Happy

    Hi Maggie,

That's such a great story! flower

I doubt it would be much of a surprise to those of us who closely interact with pigeons as to their memories and intelligence capacity. It seems, for me, at least once a day Sophie does something so extraordinary that I am left speechless.

Thanks for sharing! (What I have also found that your story reinforced for me is that pigeons seem to react--almost like doggies--to praise. If I praise Sophie for a particular behavior, even if I don't give her any treat seeds, she still wants to do it again to get the praise! sunny )

    Best,

Sorry the Crystal is sick. Hope he gets better soon and fast. That's a wonderful story. Bill is right........those of us "in the know" are not surprised at what these birdies can do and of course I know that they remember stuff.

    Hi Maggie,
Good to see you posting again. You have been missed. Yes, I think most of us can tell stories about the pigeons' capability to remember. And yet everytime it happens we are in awe before them. Its such a rewarding experience to get recognition from these little critters. I'm so glad JimmyJack did not disappoint you.

I hope Crystal will soon recover, in the meantime I bet he enjoys all the attention he gets........................Crystal. Love, Gladys

Maggie, I do hope Crystal gets better soon. That was a nice story you told, and one that gives me a little hope that Jax hasn't forgotten the times she spent indoors with me before moving outside. Very Happy

Maggie, thanks for sharing that nice story. Hope Chrystal feels better soon. And it's nice to know that our little companions don't forget all the kindnesses we show to them.
