Since I have so much time on my hands...........

Post  Lovebirds on Wed Aug 05, 2009 2:13 pm

that's a JOKE!!!............we FINALLY got our birds out on a short training toss this morning. Took them 5 miles. I'm missing 7 birds. Sad

It's REALLY hot here today so I'm HOPING that they will come in later this afternoon or sometime before dark.
We released the first group and they circled around for 10 minutes but we didn't see them for about 5 minutes, so we thought they were gone. Released the second group and they flew out a ways and came back with the first group........ Rolling Eyes
There were at least 100 feral pigeons where we released, but we didn't have much of a choice. It was either take them out further than 5 miles or bring them back shorter and either way, they are going to have to fly right over the top of these birds every week end and although WE didn't know that there were that many ferals so close to us, I'm sure that in the past 7 or 8 years, our birds have seen them numerous times. A few of the ferals joined my flock and flew for a few minutes, but then broke off and came back to the wires/ground/field...
I'm assuming that my missing birds are over there partying with their distant cousins......... ROTFL
When bed time rolls around and they see where they have to roost for the night, I'm hoping them boogy on home.

LOL, this made me laugh! I can just picture it!

Seriously though, hope the missing 7 come back as soon as they're partied out.

UMMM...I don't think so. Ferals have their place in this world, but it ain't at my loft............LOL

One more bird came in at 9:00. I put the birds out to fly after that so will have to do a head count in a little while to see if any others showed up while they were out flying. Also, I counted wrong last night. I was missing 6, not 7 and 1 came in last night and one this morning, so that means I'm missing 4. As far as I know anyway......we'll see in a little while

I'm surprized that they haven't brought any ferals home with them. My birds always bring home strays.

The missing three must be hard core partiers. There is a few in every flock.

The one that came in late yesterday afternoon did bring a feral with it. When I saw them fly over I thought two birds had come home. The feral landed in a tree then took off and we didn't see it any more.

Had another one show up at 8:00 this morning. Have to do a head count. Possibly another one came in, but I'm not sure if it's one of the lost ones or was just sitting in a tree when we left and I THOUGHT they were all in the loft. This one bird is known to do that once in a while. So, worst case is there's two missing now and best is that there's only one missing.

It gets one's nerves on edge, doesn't it Renee. Glad to hear most of them came home.

Yes Larry...it is VERY nerve wracking to say the least.
Took the birds again this morning to the same spot. Let the first group out while there were 23 (I counted them...LOL) ferals sitting on the wire. As soon as our birds came out of the basket, the local flock joined them. The whole group left headed north which is NOT the way home..... Rolling Eyes
5 minutes later, we let the second group out. We watched them fly around for a minute or two and then we left. When we arrived home, the second group was already in the loft. There were 4 birds from the first group inside with them. The rest of the 1st group showed up about 30 minutes later. They got a good work out, because just as they were getting ready to land, Mr. Hawk dove down at them. He hit one bird my husband said. I was in the loft and heard Everett yell and knew what was happening. He said when he yelled the hawk went one way and the pigeon the other way. Now, after everyone is back in the loft, a headcount tells me that I'm missing one bird. I"m assuming that the one the hawk hit is the one missing, but I really have to way of knowing that. I'll just have to keep an eye out today for that last bird.
A hawk got after them yesterday afternoon too, so I guess we'll go on lock down for a few days. Seems the hawk thinks he's found a new buffet here. redfaced

Good Luck, Renee, with your missing baby. When the hawk flies in a different direction than your pigeon, that is always a good sign. He may be a little stunned and waiting for a chance to come in.

No offense to Mr. Hawk, but he needs to go find his dinner somewhere else.

Changing the subject just a bit, but my wife witnessed a hawk hitting a robin in our neighborhood a few years back. It made her so mad, she ran down to where the hawk was sitting with the bird and ran him off, wouldn't let him have the bird to eat. I can just imagine her yelling at that hawk to get out of there. I wish I could have seen it happen.
