    Leash for pet pigeon

Post  Lapalomatriste on Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:47 pm

    Hello pigeon lovers
    I have a question
A French lady hand raised a pigeon who considers himself now as her life partner.
She wanted to build him a small coop on her window sill, bur by the first attempt he flew away and she found him back half dead a few miles away... (he was raised in her 30m² flat), so she abandoned this idea.
She wants him to get some fresh air from time to time.
Does anyone have an idea about a system with a leash for a pigeon??
Does it exists and can can it be bought?
He is feral, but she belives him to be a special kind... could anyone put a name on him?

    Thank you, Myriam

What a pretty bird. First of all, I would say that "he" is a "she".............and she's not a special KIND of pigeon.......still a feral, but the color would be a black splash.
As far as a leash, I think that this person http://www.birdwearonline.com/index.html might have what she's looking for, but I'm not sure about shipping to France?

    Hi Myriam,

That is a sweet little pigeon, very tame and bonded with her owner. It would appear to be a hen because of the way it's squatting to be mounted, this is usually hen behaviour. Smile

oh oh...you mean Squeaks is a SHE??? Shhhhh! don't tell him that!!

Actually, Squeaks does the same with me when he's in mate mode. He will nuzzle and then squat. Sometimes he will walk away, turn and rush back with his tail feathers spread. He will also squat and wing twitch. He definitely accepted me for his mate and considers my other three pigeons intruders!

He will also let me scritch his chest feathers and his head and under his wings too. Of course, once back in daddy mode on his egg in his nest, all bets are off. I can still pet him but he'll only take so much...

That is a beautiful pigeon. As long as the pigeon has a place to fly in the house, I don't think he would need to go outside to fly. She could take him out in a cage to get some sun, but not to let him fly free. Boni's PGWear "diapers" come with a leash, but one has to be careful using it. Don't think it's a good idea for flying birds to be on a leash. Better for birds who can't fly but could go on a walk and be leashed...

Leash is not a good option. Pigeon needs to exercise wings from time to time, and this can be achieved by letting him out of the cage in the room. Diaper (as one from the link) is a good option as they can be bit messy. Pigeon needs sun too. She can put him in the cage outside for couple of hours (cage needs shaded area if he becomes too hot). Other option especially during the winter is full spectrum light (available from pet shops – reptile section).
As this is pet pigeon, without homing instinct, she must be careful not to let him out.

Single Hens, (once old enough ) may elect to invite Nest Building co-operations...and if a Nest is made... may very well Lay Eggs.

Leash-wise...if only for occasional outdoors Walks...probably would work fine IF a harness is covering/restraining the Wings, but, would take some getting used to...and most likely, the Bird would reject it and be anxious and fussing/straining.

A better idea would be to have a decent size screen top and screen sides Cage for bringing the Bird outdoors, and, supervise them while they are getting their Sunshine and fresh air and so on.

I do this all the time, setting convelecents outside in their Cages for Sunshine, fresh breezes, and feral socials...

Thank you all so much for the replies.
I will forward them to this lady.
The lastest news was, that she will try to give him a pigeon friend, and if this is not succesfull, adopt him out in a pigeon recue facility near to her.
If Charlie Bird is indeed a lady, giving him a friend becomes a lot easier, as she would make friends with a cock as well as with a hen.
    But if the bird refuses pigeon company, I'll advise her not to adopt him out, as will be proven that s/he is human orientated. And will never feel comfortable with other pigeons;
I tried with my Toto, when he was still young, and with my handraised Wee, but is was of no avail.
