Hi Blackrose...
to the site!
Can you post a picture of your pigeon?
How old is this pigeon?
Have you checked for bugs?
Do you have a Vet near you?
Where are you located? There may be someone in your area who can help...
Please tell us more about your set up: how many pigeons you have....are they indoors? outdoors?
We hope to hear from you soon...I'm sure others will be along to help too!
Wishing your pigeon all the best!

Post a picture of that, if possible. Sometimes they do that because of parasites or infections.

He is about a year old, or younger. I looked for bugs and I didnt see any, there is a vet near me, but with the price of gas and the vet bill I dont want to go there unless I really have to. I have 6 pigeons: 2 pairs and 2 males. the pairs each got there own bird cage and the 2 males each got there own cage because they were not geting along. there indoor. He is the only one doing this.

I wonder if possibly something microscopic??
Did you check his mouth to make sure he doesn't have Canker?
I hope Pidgey will be along soon with some suggestions!
Are you putting anything on his chest?

Hi Blackrose,
That is a nasty looking skin problem from feather pulling!
Try some aloe juice on the skin, that is good for soothing and healing any infections and helping with overall healing. It's hard to believe a pigeon would do that kind of damage to itself from pulling feathers. I don't know what else it might be either but keep us posted.

I agree with Brad....we have heard of Parrots doing that kind of thing.
I still think it's got to be something internal or something microscopic that the pij is very sensitive to...
Really hope you can find the underlying cause, BlackRose and your pij makes a FULL recovery!! Sure looks uncomfortable!!
Aloe sounds very good...
Love and Hugs (no scritches...yet!)

That does look very nasty and sore.
I had a cockatiel that went through a spell of plucking her feathers but it was never as bad as this. I hope your lovely pigeon gets much better soon and that you can get an answer as to what is causing this.

Yeah, there are a few things for which they'll do that. His crop might be itching for one thing. And there can certainly be some folliculitis from something fungal or otherwise. Antifungal therapy might help but that's generally vet territory. There's a cocktail of aspirin, tannic acid and alcohol that sometimes helps (topically applied) in such circumstances. It's 3 grams of salicylic acid; 3 grams of tannic acid; and 100 mL of ethyl alcohol (no... DON'T drink it!). Don't know if you can find those ingredients or not.

Try aloe vera to prevent infection
its really pathetic to know about the conditions of your pigeon. why don't you try aloe vera gel on the affected area. it will surely reduce the chances of infection. this is one of the several aloe vera benefits

The Pij is fine now, it been a long time since this happened. You alittle late to be posting on it now. I ended up taking him to the vet.

Hi BlackRose, very happy to know your pigeon recovered ansd is fine today. Wouldn't you like to tell us how the vet treated your bird? It would be useful if the same problem arose with somebodyelse's pigeon. Many thanks,
Gladys

well for starters the poor thing had a cone around its head, looked funny, then she told me to give the bird vitamins in the water, she also said to put pine tar on the wound. And she said to try giving the pij more toys and things to do, maybe it was like some parrots and just bored.

Many thanks BlackRose for your prompt reply. What do you mean by "a cone around the head"? Is it some feathers in a cone shape? In that case has this cone anything to do with her problem or are you referring to the pigeon's looks when you say "the poor thing"? To me your pigeon looks very pretty on the photo, not at allfunny Also, where can pine tar be bought? Sorry to be so ignorant but I like to understand. Thanks again

poor thing was referring to his health, he is pretty, the cone is not the feather, a cone as in a plastic cone like a dog sometimes will have if they are licking a wound. Pine tar, at least around here can be found at almost any livestock feed store, its used on horses most of the time.

Hi BlackRose and how long did this take to clear up? Very interesting to me for I have some pigeons as well., not in that condition but curious to know how it ended up and how long it took to clear up. I have a West of Engfland Tumbler and just a real precious pigeon and I am really enjoying it/
