Pigeon with 1 eye missing.
This morning, I came upon a pigeon with only 1 eye. There is a closed indentation where the left eye should have been. No sign of injury. He was eating with 2 other birds. He is well adjusted. Has anyone ever seen this before. I was wondering if he was born that way or had a healed wound? I was also pleased that the other birds accept him.

I have seen one eyes pigeons as well as one legged pigeons in the city.
They adjust really well to the hands they were dealt.

I was very happy to see that this little guy was not shunned by fellow birds. He just fit in.

Re: Pigeon with 1 eye missing.
Hi Coolpige,
Sure hope the pigeon will be ok, have you seen him or her again recently? I would think it was an old injury that healed because I think a congenital defect like that would be pretty rare in a pigeon. When I think of eyes missing, I always think of a crow attack. Crows and their kind often go for the eyes first. But, it could have been something else entirely. A pigeon with one eye is at a disadvantage though and because their eyes are on the side of their head. A pigeon like this might be able to be attacked much easier on it's blind side.
I sure hope the bird continues to do ok though.

Hi Brad. Yes, I made a point of looking for this little guy, this morning. I'm worried about him because he's at a disadvantage. I found him in pretty much the same space. He was with one other pigeon. I made a point of putting down a lot of bread in his limited range of vision. I moved away, so as not to scare him. Was happy to see him eat a lot. The other bird ate just a little. I have a bad feeling because he ate so much, that he's not getting enough to eat either because others' take it from him or he can't see it. I've named him Dusty & will look for him every day.

THANK YOU, Coolpige, for keeping an eye on DUSTY!!
I know he will appreciate!!
Do you have any SEEDS to give them? Whole wheat bread would be better than white, but bread usually isn't that nutritious for them...however, I'm sure they are glad to get what they can!

Re: Pigeon with 1 eye missing.
Regarding seeds...depends on what is available to you...
I feed my feral pigeons Wild Bird Seed that I get at the store...'course, it's best to get seeds that are UNshelled as pigeons don't "shell" their seeds like parrots and some other birds.
For my indoor birds, I get Kaytee's Supreme Fortified Blend for Colombres/Dove/Palomas in a 5 lb. back at Petco. However, only 5 lbs. is very expensive for feeding ferals, unless you have a small flock. AND, while one may start off with a FEW birds, word spreads RAPIDLY! Before you know it you have 20, 30, 40...etc.!!
My feral flock knows I feed them around the same every morning and are WAITING impatiently for me!
Maybe mix some bird seed with some pieces of whole wheat bread to go farther??
Hope this helps...others may have some suggestions too...
ALL THE BEST TO THE FLOCK!!

Thanks for the info. I can get wild bird seed. I've seen it sold at the local pet store. Saw Dusty this morning. Same time, same place.Gave him whole wheat. I told him it was more nutritious. It's nice to have him waiting for me..

Thank you. I saw Dusty this morning. Had wild bird seed. He loved it. At first, I couldn't find him. Then, all of a sudden, I saw him come down from under an awning. He was alone. I talked to him while he ate. He was a hungry guy. Do you think he recognizes me?

Pigeons have excellent eyesight!
Pigeons CAN identify individual humans.
When friends come to visit and I introduce Squeaks, he knows they are strangers and is very leery! He is only comfortable with me...his mate!
But, to specifically answer your question: YES
He does recognize you!!
There have been MANY stories of members who feed feral pijies and they KNOW who their feeders are!
May Dusty continue to do well! AND, I hope you will continue to feed him and his friends!
Sending Love and Hugs

Hi. I'am glad you agree that Dusty knows me. It's nice to have a pigeon friend. You can be sure that I will continue to feed my little friend & all others in my area. I look forward to it. Unfortuantely, we have more snow coming.

Would you be able to clear a little area for them when you go to feed?
Hope so!

Being city blocks, that's hard to do but I try to throw the seeds away from people passing by. When it's just Dusty, my friend, I throw the seeds in between 2 bulidings, sort of an alley way. It takes him longer to see them & eat. This way he's not rushed.

Re: Pigeon with 1 eye missing.
I am quite worried about Dusty. NYC is supposed to have a bad storm- up to a foot of snow possible. With his eye missing, he is at a disadvantage. Does anyone think this can drive him away from his usual spot. I hope he doesn't disappear. I look for him & he for me, everyday.

Re: Pigeon with 1 eye missing.
Hi,
It's good that you feed Dusty, and he has formed a nice bond with you. I wouldn't worry too much about Dusty in the storm. Pigeons are very hardy and resourceful little birds. He seems to have been getting along okay in spite of his eye problem, so I would expect he will be just fine. I am sure he will also appreciate it when you toss him some seeds the next time. In the meantime, he will probably do what all pigeons do and find a place to keep warm and wait for the weather to get better.
Best,
Bill B.

Hi Coolpige,
I agree with Bill, pigeons are very resourceful and hardy birds and Dusty should be ok. Keep us posted and with the snow you're supposed to get, you feeding him will help him out during the storm.

The rain/sleet mix has now turned to all snow. The reports of 1 foot will probably materialize. I went out earlier & saw Dusty. I put a whole bunch of seeds/wholewheat bread in the alley I usually feed him in, but under a covering, so hopefully, it didn't all turn to mush. He knows me & I watched him eat. Then, as weather worsened, I had to leave. I felt so bad. Don't know when I'll be able to get to him w/more food. I'm worried about him. He does have a disadvantage with eye misssing.

I'm sure Dusty will be waiting for you when you can return!
By this time, he has found a cozy place. I know you will get back to feed him as soon as you can. These birds are survivors...he will be just fine - even with one eye!
Of course, we will look forward to future updates!
