Linda, I've read that the photographer who snapped this all black penguin said the bird appeared to be assimilated and had a black and white mate. He is thought to suffer from melanism a mutation that turned it black.

I seem to recall that penquins have evolved with white bellies to make them harder to see by predators from below. That would make this guy an easy target in an underwater flock of penquins - or would it be a school of penquins seeing how they are swimming?

Good question Hugh!
Are you sure the poor guy didn't just swim through an oil slick some place?
Now they should keep an eye on him when he mates to see if they reproduce black chicks. (When they are adults of course!)
