    Painful ears

Post  Gladys Chardon on Tue Mar 30, 2010 6:55 pm

Visiting one of my grandsons today I tried to caress his dog and as I held one of his ears in my hand he howled in pain. I was flabbergasted as I had held his ear very softly. I took a close look but couldn't see anything wrong with it. When I asked my grandson he said that both his ears have always been sore even as a puppy and that the vets could not explain the reason for it. Rey is a rather big dog about 5 years old (no particular race), very sweet and affectionate and looks quite happy and healthy. My great grandsons (4 and 2 years old) know about it and never touch his ears.
Has anyone heard of such a condition in a dog?

My oldest dog does that and its not because it hurts.
He has learned by playing with the younger female that when she bites his ears he hollers and she stops.
Even if I touch his ears he yelps like you hit him with a bat.
Not sure if the dog you are talking about is actually in pain but I just wanted to share what my crazy dog does Smile

That's really interesting Ed, how your dog has learned that behaviour! Smile Not surprising at all, but something new to me and could explain what is going on with Rey. Maybe he had a bad experience with his ears as a puppy and now does this whenever his ears are touched.

The only thing I would have mentioned or thought of is ear mites or some type of ear infection. Here are a couple of websites about these conditions, Gladys. Not sure if the information will help or if this is even the problem, but you can read and/or forward to your grandson.

Max is part Cocker Spaniel and inherited the lovely ear infections associated with the breed (another curve I learned). If there is any sort of wax build up or infection or mites the dog will be scratching. Is there any swelling or redness?

Thanks Ed, Brad and Cyreen. I have read all the links provided but I'm inclined to disregard the possibility of an infection in Rey's ears since the vets never found anything wrong and I cannot imagine the dog could go all those years with infected ears without any treatment whatsoever!!!! Could he?
No, he doesn't scratch his ears at all and I don't see how he could if the flapping part of his ears are so painful to the touch. There is no redness or any other suspicious signs. Ed's story about his dog seems the closer situation to that of Rey's. Perhaps both these dogs have had a painful experience with their ears and now they howl in fear when someone attempts to touch them?
When I was young we had a dog who liked to bite one of my mother's favourite cushions. After she gave hime. a hiding he would howl very loudly if my mother ever caught him making a go for that cushion even if she was several meters away from him. This brought us children running to his rescue. The cushion finished locked away in a wardrobe. I had forgotten this story until Ed told his own story.
I passed your comments and links to my grandson but he refuses to take the dog to the vet again as this has been going for so long and the vets do not seem to know better than he does.
    Thanks again for your help.
    Gladys

    Hi Gladys,

I didn't think that the information that I provided held any merit or facts as to what might be going on with Rey. I think E'd story and suggestion has much more relevance to what your grandson's dog may be going through. It doesn't make sense that he would have an ear infection really and one that has gone on so long without treatment.

I don't trust vets either, they are mostly all crooks and many of them don't have a clue what they are talking about. Wink Razz

Anyway, good luck with Fey and I'm sure you'll remember to never touch his ears again. Wink

Max is the same way about people poking in his mouth. He had jaw injury following a camping trip a couple years ago (honestly, I think a kid took a kick at him) and couldn't open his mouth wide or chew properly. A mortgage payment later, the vet at the emergency hospital said they couldn't find anything obviously wrong - best guess was TMJ. As a result he became paranoid about fingers in his mouth.

Its taken two years for him to kinda trust me in his mouth again, forget the vet.

P.S. Like the new forum background! Very airy!

Yes, I noticed the "difference" in the site too.

Love skies and clouds and such pretty pastel colored "buttons!" flower

I was wondering how long it would be before Brad started "tweaking" for our "change pleasure..." lol!
