    Broken flight feather

Post  beatlemike on Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:22 pm

I noticed one of my hens doesnt do alot of flying when I release her. She can fly but never goes very far before landing. I then noticed her very end flight feather is broken off. Is that affecting her flying? Should I pull the rest of it out so she can grow a new one or will the broken one grow out on its own? Thanks

I would not fly her for at least 3 weeks or so.
You dont have to pull the feather as it will drop on its own.
Usually takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to regrow the feather.

    Count your blessings, Beatlemike!

On Valentine's Day weekend, my friend brought over a pigeon from her back yard who couldn't seem to fly! One look told me the problem...ALL flight feathers missing on his right wing! Looks like they had been broken off.

So VAL (Valentino) is now enjoying my balcony while his flight feathers grow back. STILL no flights! I would LOVE to see him on his own but it's been over 4 WEEKS now...*sigh*

AND, I never had pigeons feeding from my balcony bird feeder...but I do now! Why? Good ole VAL CALLS and here they come! There are a couple, in particular, who will stay around after my main morning feed to discuss the various neighborhood gossip!

I have put a snap-on band on VAL so I can ID him after he's "free." Will be interesting to see if he will show up at his cage for food after he leaves! AND, bring a few of his friends! Rolling Eyes

I sure hope this is not gonna be a SIX month ordeal!! affraid Faints

You might want to check the birds health if that's not the norm for her. One missing flight feather shouldn't cause her to not want to fly...IMHO

Nice - you get the neighbourhood daredevil and now he's using your balcony as a flop house, hanging out, telling war stories to his buddies.

    Wait a minute - I think I've dated him.

Actually, I think his two "buds" are there for the seeds he wastes...war stories are an extra perk. Oh wait, VAL doesn't have the war stories, his friends do! VAL is a POW (Pigeon of War). Mmmm, quid pro quo...food in exchange for news of the "outside" world!

Darn! I wish that bird would re-grow those flights! Pretty soon I'll be making up my own - uh - stories of high adventure! Rolling Eyes

VAL is inside tonight as the temps have dropped a good 20 degrees and there's a possibility of rain. At least he can look out the window!

Hoping VAL grows his feathers soon! Very Happy I can sense that you are already attached to that bird already....another one for your growing flock perhaps?? Razz He couldn't have ended up in a better place than yours to be loved and cared for. cheers

Hey Mike, I have to agree with goldenboy. If she's not sick she may be eggy.
My rollers come down through the tree branches some times and break off flights.
I just pull them out (so they grow back faster) and they are back in the air. They just whislte when they fly...Lol

EEEK! Wish I had the guts to do that, Bruce! Since I don't what I'm doing, not taking any chances that I end up pulling somthing I shouldn't! *sigh* I'm just gonna wait it out!

And, Lindi, no, I don't have a lot of contact with VAL because he will be released and I don't want him bonding with me. However, I must be doing something right because when I go to feed or clean he ATTACKS! The back of my hands are beginning to LOOK like pin cushions! I can safely say he doesn't LIKE me....bless his heart!
