    A wild Pigeon Adopted us....

Post  mocaulfield on Sun May 16, 2010 10:53 pm

I am hoping someone might be able to help with a pigeon situation my husband and I are experiencing. We live in Los Angeles in Laurel canyon. About 10 days ago a grown pigeon appeared outside my husband’s office. Pigeons do land at our property from time to time but always take off in a flurry when approached. This pigeon was different form the start. It spent some time looking at my husband through the window. He finally went out side and walked toward it and it did not fly away. In fact it hopped down and started walking around his feet. When our dog walked up the pigeon was not afraid and the dog didn’t seem to pay it much attention. It arrives outside our back door every morning and if we don’t pay attention to it he/she fly’s up to the window and pecks. If we leave a door open it will walk in and “hang out” around our feet. If we are sitting outside it comes over and sits near us. If we aren’t home and a door is open we arrive to it sitting on a couch cushion. It is agreeable when asked to leave and walks out when I point to the door. It fly’s when it needs to but otherwise it seems to like to walk. It follows my husband or I on foot when we walk down the drive to get the mail and will walk step by step behind us up the back steps. It will not let us pick it up but on several occasions it has flown and landed on my husband and it let us both pet its wings although only briefly before walking off.

We are not bird people per say. Nothing against them but neither of us have owned a bird. We admittedly know little about pigeons but this one seems to be special. We have only fed it a few crackers over the past 10 days as I thought it best to let it move on to its old life but even if we don’t feed it all day long it still comes back the next morning. Has anyone heard of such behavior in a pigeon? I assume it is feral as it has no band to identify it otherwise. It is very dark in color almost black with a dark grey under belly and under wing area and there is a purplish hew in the sun. No visible white markings or bands.

Frankly we aren’t sure what to do with this pigeon. What are the implications of taking it in and if that is the appropriate thing to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the pigeon had decided you're both "keepers". Lucky you

Seriously, your adult pigeon sounds more domestic than the freeloader I rescued a year and a half ago as a baby. That's no wild pigeon.

How long have you and your husband lived in that house?

    P.S. Can you take a picture - I'm curious.

We have lived here for almost four years and before that it was a group of college students that didn't keep birds as far as we know. Thank you very much for writing back so quickly. I can't seem to get my pictures to upload. Happy to email it to you if you send me your address.

This is really is a remarkable pigeon. I am fascinated to learn more about it. Wondering now if it is a male or female.

    Thanks

    Monique

Generally, the sex is a matter of whether or not they lay eggs. I sent you PM - if you email your pictures, I can post them for you.

    HI Monique! First...

    Welcome

Does indeed sound like a pigeon has "adopted" you. There HAVE been members where this has happened. However, in many cases, they are wearing bands (possible racing homing pigeons) or a type of fancy breed that doesn't fly a lot or someone's lost pet.

You are MOST BLESSED and soooo many pigeon lovers would give a LOT to have one adopt them!

Pigeons eat seeds and pet stores sell bird seed. I buy a 5# bag of Kaytee's Supreme for Columbes/Doves/Palomas, sold by Petco.

What would be really nice is if you could have some sort of shelter (small animal cage?) with some seeds and water for him at night and then let him go in and out as he pleases during the day.

Pigeons make wonderful pets and are very intelligent! The only way you would know if you have a hen is if she lays an egg. Then, again, sometimes their behavior could be a clue. But people have been fooled thinking they had a male when they had a hen!

Would you be willing to "keep" him/her?

And, yes, a picture would be great! THANKS, Cyreen!

    ALL THE BEST

    What a cutie!!

Looks like a Spread (pigeon all one color). Not sure if a feral tho...I'm not that good IDing non-feral guys! Shape of the head may not be feral...don't know for sure...

Sure will look forward to more updates about him/her, Monique!

I see he/she likes to "communicate" and wanted to use your computer! hilarious

Thank you for posting the pics! And thank you Desert Fire for your enthusiastic comments. If you have any thoughts on the kind of pigeon he/she may be I would be curious. I just went out side to see if it was still around and its sleeping perched outside the door on a metal rail. I put out an empty wooden wine crate so it will have somewhere to call home. Well it looks like our pigeon has found us. You never know what life will bring you. I'm off to the pet store to buy seed tomorrow. Many thanks for all thoughts posted and if there are any pointers to share I would appreciate them (Questions that come to mind: do we need to bathe it? Take it to the vet to see if it has any parasites or bug issues? Or should we just let it be a pigeon?)

I'll check in and let you know how it goes.

    All the best,

    Monique

Actually, if you could catch him/her, you could do some checks: open beak and look in mouth...should be clear and pink with no lumps, bumps or odor.

Sometimes "bugs" hide in the feathers.

Check the POOPS. Should be well formed with a little white.

If you have an Avian Vet, wouldn't hurt to get him/her body & poop checked out. There are Vets who won't check pigeons but you can always say it's a pet, which it is!

Using a hose to form "rain" for a "shower" OR put out a shallow pan (kitty litter box works well) with a couple of inches of water. They can really go to town taking a bath. My first pigeon, Mr. Squeaks, will do both.

Sounds like a great adventure awaits! Once a pigeon has entered your heart, they are there for life!

OK! thanks for all of the tips. After posting with the two of you I feel more confident about adopting the pigeon and will take a new look at it all tomorrow. A bath sounds like a great idea. I will say this pigeon certainly has a lot of character. What an interesting adventure.

I will let you know how it goes.

Would also like to add that IF this pij seems to prefer walking to flying (mmmm, may be a ROLLER??), you could always have a small animal cage in the house and let him walk and fly around inside.

AND, believe it or not, but there ARE "diapers" for pigeons. I know a pigeon lady who makes them and they work WONDERFULLY! Called PGWear, each one is custom made for the pigeon. The lady's name is Boni and her site address is

    www.birdwearonline.org

Mr. Squeaks is modeling one of his "suits" in her PGWear area...

If it helps, the following thread is my adventure into pigeons...

    Ollie [click]

I just don't think you little guy sounds feral - s/he's too comfortable with people to be wild; someone has cared for that bird. If you have a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre where you are, they should have a vet that could give him/her a first check-up. As for food, if you intend to keep him/her as a pet (which I'm not sure you have much choice on) you can train them to pellets - I feed Ollie Roudybush pellets (small), no issues. Very nutritious and you don't have to worry about grit. If you're picking up seed, make sure you pick-up some oyster shell too and maybe a cuttle bone for calcium (just in case it's a girl).

Welcome to the forum Monique! Welcome

What a delightful introduction and thank you for sharing your story with us. He/she certainly is a very pretty pigeon. Very Happy Cyreen and Shi have posted excellent advice and I'm glad you are giving some serious thought to adopting this bird. cheers

I have to agree that it looks like this pigeon has been someone's pet at one time or has certainly been cared for by someone who has befriended the bird while it was likely still young.

Your pigeon looks very contented and at home with you. They really do make wonderful pets with their charming ways. The pigeon in my avatar is Jax a feral hen who found her way into my life 6 years ago as a youngster. I also have a rescue ex racing pigeon named Paddy who found herself very lost and injured in 2007. They have both paired up together and happily live in their loft outdoors. Jax lived indoors with me for 4 years and became very attched to myself. I really couldn't imagine my life without them. Very Happy

Welcome again and I look forward to hearing of more adventures with your new pigeon friend. Feed pigeon
