I did a search on this and couldn't come up with a specific discussion on this. There are of course a few threads that deal with nest boxes in general but I'm not sure exactly which one you are referring to.

I didn't watch the video again but this video has an in depth discussion about nests and poops from what I recall:

I hope this helps some. Very Happy

Thank you very much Lindi for trying to find the info in question.Actually it is not a thread specifically on this subject but the subject cropped up in another thread because of some vet commenting on the advantages of not cleaning the nests. One in particular was that the chicks could thus develop an adequate inmunity against bacteria. I wanted to comment at the time but left it for later and now I can't remember the title of the thread. There was also a report cited written by some aviary vet I think. It was only about two or three weeks ago so I'm sure the members who participated in the discussion will remember. Thank you again Lindi for your trouble.

    Poop, boost their natural immunity...?

Post  Pigeonmumbler on Mon Aug 09, 2010 2:38 pm

I don’t know or ever herd about the poop in the nest helps in boosting or builds the young birds natural immune system or “boost their natural immunity”… I do know about the natural Parents milk does help in the nestlings natural immunity to ward off infections & disease and against bacteria and I will also debate of many breeders of fancy birds like the “short face types” and other types! that switch eggs and use bumpers to rise those types of fancy’s that in a natural setting the birds would not be able to raise there own young and would die off if not without the assistance of mans intervention… Please don’t get me wrong because I myslef have used other parents to raise nestling that for one reason or another have been abanded by their parents… I have seen, read and been told that many of the fancy types that are not able to feed there own young will always suffer and are susceptible to all types of infections, disease and bacteria due to the fact that they can not breed, rear, and sustain themselves in a natural state… but if you where to go to a show or ask a breeder of theses types of fancys birds they may tell you the opposite or would agree if honest that it takes special and I mean a special degree of knowledge to really breed this type of bird, but it can be done…!… I don’t want the keepers and fanciers of those birds to be offended, that is not my intent and I will allways be willing to hear there side with all due respect..!…
Now back to the nest poop,,, I do come to my own conciliation that the odors of the nest & coop due become a mental stamp in there homing ability and associate the smells of there surroundings with safety, comfort and home… In conclusion to the topic at hand “POOP boost their natural immunity”… I may be wrong because my opinions are solely based on my own experience and knowledge I have obtained over the 35 years of keeping Pigeons and I have never done any scientific or done any methodical research on the subject…

I have also read and heard of leaving the poops and not being "overly" concerned about keeping the nest clean until the squabs are older.

I know when feral pigeons build their nests, no human comes by to "clean!"

When Peter Pied Piper of ASU fame, build his nest, wellll....

I personally do not clean the nest boxes until the birds have been weaned.
Once weaned and the parents are still sitting on the eggs I clean out the box completely and start over with the next round of youngsters.

    Poop, boost their natural immunity

Yes ED & DF, I totally agree with both of you that it is not harmful to leave the nestlings in the nest...!... I personally clean clay bowls and replace paper bowls after 10 to 14 days, Then repeat when the young are ready to leave the nest and the birds are ready for the second round of eggs, and if lay an egg before that I just place it in the new bowl... Believe me the hen would rather sit on the eggs then be chased by the cock all day...!

Where I have doubts is that the poop enhances or boost their natural immune system...But I have been wrong before...!

    Hi Pigeonmumbler,
Thank you for your post on this subject and comments on further issues that have to do with the pigeons wellbeing. Regarding the notion that nests should not be scraped and cleaned this is shown in a book written by Wendell Levi entitled The Pigeon Book and cited in another thread by one of our members. I am not at all convinced about the expressed notion and have commented on it today under the thread "Great website..thought I would join"

NICE try, Beatlemike! Rolling Eyes Only one problem...you don't grow feathers... ROTFL

ON the other hand, I suppose your wife should be grateful that you don't back over the side like the squabs do to help keep their nest clean as they get older! hilarious ROTFL
