Found injured wild pigeon still fighting, but very sick.No sign of blood, not walking, moves wings.Head covered in ticks how can i get them off,or do i leave them 2 drop off? Put surgical spirit on them with a cotton bud.Have put him in a cage with water in a solid shallow bowl.Put some grass seed & bread crumbs in.Never having had pet birds not sure what to do,feed etc.Perhaps he will not make it through the night, but i hope so.Any advice appreciated karen.

Hi Karen!
to the site!
So sorry to meet you under these stressful circumstances.
Do you have access to any Vets in your area? You can tell them it's your pet. Any rehabbers or sanctuaries?
A gentle bath may help get rid the of bugs.
Perhaps a heating pad, set on low with a towel over it will help.
Pigeons eat grain and seeds. Do you have a pet store or grocery store that would have seeds? Also, pigeons don't eat seeds that come in a shell, like parrots.
You could also offer warm (tepid) water with a small pinch of salt and sugar dissolved in it for hydrating purposes.
Has the bird pooped yet? If so, what does it look like?
Are you able to post any pictures?
Hopefully, others will be along with more advice.
Sending the best survival thoughts!

HI KAREN
THE WATER NEEDS TO BE DEEP ENOUGH FOR THE BIRD TO GET HIS BEAK RIGHT IN UP TO THE END. WITH CATS AND DOGS COVERING THE TICS WITH VASELINE SUFOCATES THEM AND YOU CAN PULL THEM OFF AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURZ DON'T KNOW IF THATS OK FOR BIRDS THOUGH.
I HOPE THIS HELPS GOOD LUCK

Do not put vaseline on the pigeon because as that vaseline gets around on their body and feathers they will freeze to death because they can't regulate their body temperature and they could die from that...c.hert

Hi Karen and welcome to the forum!
Sorry you've been brought here for unfortunate reasons.
Shi has offered you some good advice, suggestions and questions. C. hert is right about the vaseline, please don't use this on the pigeon. Neil was just trying to help with his suggestion...thanks Neil! Hopefully your patient made it through the night, they are strong birds usually and unless completely down and out.
The lice is the least of your worries right now and don't worry either, you or your pets won't be affected by these bugs, they are specific to pigeons. Check your local pet store for tick/lice spray or powder for caged birds for something suitable.
Warmth is very important, a calm/stress free environment that is semi dark. If you can get it stabilized and eating and drinking, then you might be able to buy some time. Keep us posted and hopefully the bird will have made it through the night.

very ill pigeon
Thanks for all the advice, but unfortunately he didn't make it through the night.Judging by the size of the ticks i think he had probably been on the groung, injured for a while when we found him.I guess at least he's no longer suffering, sorry never got to know him, Karen.

Awwww...so sorry Karen.
You did your best and at least provided the pigeon with a nice place to escape from frights and direct harm. This bird must have been really sick or injured like you said.
Sorry to read this just now.....thanks again for caring!

Hi Karen and

But I am glad you found him and were able to make him feel secure and at least he escaped a worst sort exposed as he was without any defense. I hope you will stay with us. We need people like you who care. BTW if you need any help with your rabbits we have members very experienced in their care and many of our members are dog owners and lovers. Best wishes
