    Aloe Vera Benefits…
This morning I was adding Aloe Vera to the water just as I been doing for over 40 years, because it was a remedy that my Grandmother gave me for some young Pigeons that had Pox, Not only was I consuming Aloe Vera since I was a kid But my GMom would Apply (use) it for Burns, Cuts, Rashes and tummy aches and then “Pigeons” as stated above… She told me to rub it on the birds Pox and to add it to the Water that it would keep the birds healthy and Would avoid Mosquitoes from biting the birds… WOW it worked, Go figure? What the heck did my Gmom Know about Pigeons???… So I been given it to my Pigeon ever since then… I may have written and mention it before to other Pigeon fanciers about my secret weapon because you wont find in any, I mean In any pigeon handlers regiment, treatment or preventive usage against diseases for Pigeons… In other words No Studies have been conducted on how Aloe Vera effects Pigeons! But I am Convinced that it has worked for me for over 40 years and use it every week in the water and will continue to use it with all the other natural remedies I use… I have never had an outbreak of PMV, Canker and Pox effect my Birds EVER!!!… And I have never injected my birds for PMV, Never had to treat my birds for Canker expect for birds that I have Purchased from others, which I would Quickly Isolate when detected and treat with Natural Remedies and if the bird did not show signs of Improvement after 2 weeks I would cull the birds, Because I would not sell or give anyone a sick bird and I have never had problems with Pox… I Know I’m talking a lot about natural Remedies but if I have to be truthful with myself the only medication I do use is Amoxicillin which is an Great broad spectrum antibiotic, Very good against Salmonella, E-coli, Colds, Strep & Staph and Canker species of bacteria. I use only the Dosage that Children are given for Throat Infections, One drop every other day for a week to a sick Bird which I cant Diagnosis and once again I would Quickly Isolate when detected and treat and if the bird did not show signs of Improvement after 2 weeks I would cull the bird… Back to Aloe Vera, I use ½ cup of Aloe Vera Juice 99.9 pure, to a liter of water Once a week… One of the best Articles I have found on Aloe Vera for birds was written By; Carolyn Swicegood, I hope this is Helpful…

Aloe Vera is a thick-leafed perennial succulent belonging to the lily family and resembling a cactus plant. It is perhaps the best-known medicinal plant in North America and is also known as the burn plant. It has been used fin over four thousand years all over the world for a great variety of human and animal ailments. If you apply the gel from the inner leaf to an itchy insect bite or a painful sunburn, you will get instant relief Even cuts and bruises are instantly soothed by the application of the gel. due to the pain-killing action of Lupeol, Salicylic Acid, and Magnesium. A poultice made from this inner-leaf gel is highly effective on burns, bites, cuts, blisters, bruises and blemishes. As a first aid-treatment, it can stop pain and reduce the chance of infection and scarring while greatly enhancing the healing process. Although skin cancer is a serious medical problem requiring medical attention, there are many reports of total cures by applying Aloe Vera gel two to four times a day for several months. Cold pressed Aloe Vera gel is hypoallergenic, has anti-itch properties. is a superior skin penetrant, and is an effective skin moisturizer. It's renewed popularity has not been lost on the cosmetics industry Just read the labels of such products as moisturizers, cleansers, deodorants, lotions, suntan preparations. Shampoos and conditioners for hair and quite often you will find Aloe Vera listed among the ingredients, sometimes as the main ingredient. Even "baby wipes" now contain Aloe Vera!
Many of us use this natural healing agent to treat the skin problems of our parrots. Whereas chemical ointments may have toxic side effects in our birds, Aloe can he used to soothe and heal minor cuts, bruises, abrasions, and rashes with complete safety. There is preliminary evidence that Aloe gel spray is effective with some feather plucking in parrots. It is thought that this effect is due to the "anti-itch" properties of Aloe. The sooner treatment is begun. the better the chances of cessation of this frustrating problem. as the long-term habitual plucker is more difficult to treat. Try filling a spray bottle with four parts pure water and one part Aloe Vera. (Do not use cold spray on the bare skin of a feather-plucked bird). It can he made stronger or weaker as needed.
From the experiences I personally know of with Aloe Detox. it probably should he a part of every parrot owner's first aid arsenal. Aloe Detox is a detoxifying formula available from better health food stores. It contains double-strength Aloe Vera Gel (200:1) with pure Aloe Vera pulp and a natural herbal blend of Milk Thistle, Burdock, Dandelion, Echinacea, Green Lea, Red Clover and Blue Cohosh.. There are several brands available but the cases that I know of personally were successfully treated with a brand called "Natureade" which uses all organic ingredients and has been around since I926. At this writing, it costs less than fifteen dollars for thirty- two fluid ounces. It is recommended at the ratio of one part formula to two parts water for HUMAN consumption. Because it is non-toxic, one can adjust the amount given a parrot according to the severity of its medical condition.
One case was that of an Amazon baby, which a practicing veterinarian had given up for dead because of a very stubborn and serious crop problem. The bird had been treated with spinach. BeneBac. Nystatin and even Tylosine with some improvement, but after two feedings with Aloe Detox. the bird made a dramatic recovery and the problem has never recurred. In another case, two veterinarians had been unable to diagnose or successfully treat an adult female Eclectus which was extremely ill. Both had tried everything at their disposal to save her but finally sent her home to he kept comfortable until the inevitable end. In desperation, the owner started the bird on Aloe Detox and for the first time in six weeks, the Eclectus resumed eating, gained weight, and within weeks had perfectly normal values on a CBC. One of the veterinarians commented that had he not drawn the blood himself, he would have sworn that it came from a different bird which had never been ill! These are documented cases, although no formal tests with controls have been run on this product as far as I know. At the very least, when our veterinarians give up on seriously ill birds or other pets, there is nothing to lose by trying this all-natural and non-toxic product.
Although it has been used in the United States mainly as a treatment for surface skin injuries and problems. Aloe is used primarily as a beverage in the rest of the world. Aloe is effective for many inflammatory conditions of the digestive system and other organs. It has been shown in lab tests to prevent stomach lesions and to cure gastric and peptic ulcers. There have been many reports that it is effective in cases of colitis and other inflammations of the digestive tract. Just as in humans, many health conditions in parrots and other animals begin with digestive problems. Many parrot owners now seek to prevent these problems by the regular addition of Aloe Vera to their water or food supply. In the wild, our birds could seek out natural clays and plants to detoxify the foods they consume which may have toxic properties. Few of us provide our birds an effective substitute for this valuable component of their diet. In Russia, tests were conducted on rabbits to see if Aloe increased the body's ability to handle harmful substances. Of the rabbits given Aloe Vera for thirty days, a third of them were able to survive deadly doses of Strychnine. Whereas, no rabbits without the Aloe Vera were able to survive. This could indicate that the natural protective functions of the body are stimulated by this remedy. Considering the fact that the fresh fruits and vegetables as well as the seeds and grains that we feed to our birds are usually contaminated by varying amounts of pesticides and other chemicals. The addition of a detoxifying agent could prevent many illnesses and discomforts as well as prolong their life spans, which all too often are not what they could and should be. Perhaps the addition of Aloe to the diet of parrots could be considered the next best thing to feeding all organic foods, which sometimes are expensive and difficult to obtain. The polysaccharides found in Aloe Vera gel exhibit antiviral activity and enhance immune cell function. Aids patients have been able to obtain relict from many of their symptoms such as night sweats and fever without the toxic side effects of prescription drugs. If this enhanced immunity translates into less illness for our birds, it's definitely worth trying.
Many arthritis sufferers have found that their aches and pains respond to an oral regimen of four tablespoons of Aloe Vera gel daily. At that rate, a gallon of gel or juice will last one person for two months. When the dosage is titrated down to the small amount needed for a parrot, Aloe Vera may he the least expensive supplement on the market. It is obvious in older parrots that they too have arthritic changes causing aches and pains. It certainly would seem possible that they too may be helped by the addition of Aloe to their diet. There are many claims by dog owners that the addition of Aloe to the diet made remarkable improvements in their dogs crippling arthritis. Many people swear by stabilized Aloe Vera juice as a nasal irrigant to prevent and eliminate the discomfort of sinus conditions. Many of our birds too suffer with this malady and the use of an Aloe Vera and saline solution to flush congested sinuses may prove to he a useful remedy. In addition to all of the aforementioned benefits to our birds. the following conditions also have been improved by the use of Aloe Vera: abscesses, cysts. E.Coli., Fungus. Mycohacterium, Strep and Staph infections, Salmonella, Respiratory infections, Yeast infections. and parasites! And best of all, even if Aloe Vera does not improve all of these conditions. How many other remedies can make the claim that they do no harm? At the very least, in non-emergency situations, Aloe Vera can be tried before other products which may have detrimental side effects. Perhaps preventative use of this wonderful natural remedy will restore some of the components missing from the diets of our parrots and prevent some of the associated problems…

    Thanks, Louie! cheers

I think this information should be "Pinned" for resource informations!**

I have Aloe Vera growing on my balcony. VERY hardy plant! And, yes, I have certainly heard of the medicinal qualities of this plant and have taken A.V. myself!

I, too, believe that "less can be more" and too much medicating can not only be dangerous but can cause eventual resistence against certain meds.

And, speaking of "natural," I posted a thread about the use of Carrot Juice to fight viruses! Article was posted in my AZ Pigeon Club Newsletter.

Keep up the great work! I, too, believe in a "natural" way whenever possible...

    Love and Hugs

    1. Plenty of our members
    2. Im a forum moderator its my job. (all I did was remove the word cull and added the word remove)
    3. If you engage in lethal culling of healthy pigeons or other animals, this is NOT the place for you. (On main page) even though it says healthy its a known fact on this site there is no talk of killing pigeons.
All I was trying to do was save you a lashing from members.
Next time your on your own!
    With all due respect.

I also edited Shi's post talking bout the cull part.
I was just trying to keep the peace as I have seen what that one word has done to this forum in the past.
    But no worries.
I will not ever edit a post again.

Ed I understand that you are a Monitor of this forum and that yes you have all the rights that status grants you even to edit posts by members that have violated the terms they agreed with by Joining this Forum…
Before posting my reference piece “Aloe Vera” I read it and notice the word “Cull” and understood that I was in the guide lines because of the context in which it was written, ( if the bird did not show signs of Improvement after 2 weeks I would cull the birds, Because I would not sell or give anyone a sick bird ) I would not cull, remove, kill, slaughter, execute, destroy, exterminate, eradicate, put down, put to sleep, assassinate, massacre, dispatch or bump off any of my healthy Pigeons or any Animal for that fact!… I’m a man that has cried with my 5 yr old Daughter when we buried her gold fish in the back yard, I treated and adopted animals like dogs, birds and cats that I found injured… My dog buddy was found and treated and now is part of my family for yrs… I’m no Veterinarian and dont claim to be one, but one thing I do know about for over 40 yrs is Pigeons and if one of my birds does not improve after 2 weeks treatments with my 40 yrs of experience and knowledge of pigeons (I will now “remove” the bird Because I would not sell or give anyone a sick bird ) There is a paradox in this Ed at 6 yrs old my daughter had another goldfish that died and she flushed it down the Toilet and didn’t cry, because I spoke to her about why certain animals pass away when we buried her goldfish in the back yard when she was 5 yrs old, she understood and excepted that life is given and lost at 6 yrs old… and now yrs later at 22 yrs of age we both cried over the Phone about a year ago when we remembered about her Goldfish, oh yeah the goldfish name was “bobbles”…. So you ALL would have to excuse me for culling my Sick Bird… But with no sarcasm intended if you feel I offended you let me know and I’ll give you my Number and we can both cry over the Phone….Louie

Pigeonmumbler, I bought a nice size bottle of pure aloe vera from Foys and I have used it on cuts and bruises as well as a stomach upset one time--hard to get used to but I had to mix it ginger ale--even with that I think it worked and I keep it in the icebox for soothing my hands and stuff like that and it works very nice and is not too thick with greasey feeling like other stuff I tried. I like it..Thanks for the wonderful posting and I also think it should be a stickly.. Ed did not mean anything but I understand your point too.. Thank you both for your wonderful, wonderful and educational postings...I found it expensive at Foys but it well worth it..and I hate the word "cull" and won't enter into a discussion about it but believe me I have my reasons and have seened toooo much... I love you both and thank you so much......c.hert

    Not to inject myself into anything but to come to terms with the act of culling ;
    Dictionary meaning

    Culling

    - 3 dictionary results
    cull
       /kʌl/ Show Spelled[kuhl] Show IPA
    –verb (used with object)
    1.
    to choose; select; pick.
    2.
to gather the choice things or parts from.
    3.
    to collect; gather; pluck.
    –noun
    4.
    act of culling.
    5.
something culled, esp. something picked out and put aside as inferior

There is also the unmentioned "killing of" animals that we are familiar with ....
    however

I am sure that most of us choose how we interpret the word when we read it but I would hazard a guess that it holds no fatal connotation. I would not be a happy camper to read any posting where the author admitted to killing ( using that terminology) an animal because it was inferior in some way.

Thanks Ed for bringing this forward.

I am so stupid when it comes to buying stuff and you just saved me almost $18.00 by buying this from Wal-mart...I just read advertisement and if it really sounds good for the pigeons I just buy it...Listen to the sales pitch on how good it is for the birds and its all true. My husband used to get humor out of the fact that I was just easy to sell things too..This is the piece by Foys:
Aloe Vera Juice: Great for use in birds and animals. Aloe stimulates the immune system, kills some viruses. Repairs, coats the entire gastric system like a liquid bandage. Over 300 aloe juices on the market but only a few are processed to enhance the immune potential. The Mucopoly Saccharide count (MPS) should be between 10,000 and 14,000. Don.t be fooled by cheap imitators-organic, cold pressed, cold processed. The whole leaf contains 200 regenerating nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals; these are easily absorbed into the gastric system. Yellow sap is removed, hence will not cause loose droppings. Add 1 tablespoon per gallon to drinking water once or twice a week. I take myself for ulcerated colitis.
    #4004 Aloe Vera Juice 32 oz $27.95
    #4005 Aloe Vera Juice 32oz 2 for 49.95

Now what I figure all we need is the whole leaf with the sap removed and we can get some from Desert Fire for she grows the stuff---and how cheap would that be--but would she charge us double in order to spoil Mr. Squeaks and her gang of love ones with this pigie clothing?? I am going to order some things from Foys and I took this one item off the list and now I am going to wal-mart and take a look at things as well as whole foods and see what they have by comparing.
This is fun for me and I will let you all know about whole foods prices and what they write or say...Thanks for saving me a lot of money my friend.....c.hert

Great information Louie! I tried aloe vera a long time ago when my birds were sick. It was hard for me to gauge if it was helping or not at the time because this was a long time ago and my birds had other things going on. Anyway, long story short, I've heard very good things about this for pigeons and most of us know that it's got a good reputation for treating various problems in humans.

Here's a link to the product that c.hert mentioned that they sell at Foy's: http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/4004.html

Ed, thanks for looking out for some of our more sensitive members and the use of the word "cull". I hope that everything got straightened out between Louie and yourself. As Shi often reminds us and it's true, communication can be flawed or misinterpreted on forums like this, it's just the way things go. I know you were just looking out for the members and Louie himself, I appreciate it! Smile

    August in the Loft
One is an oral vaccine to be administered five days every month on the feed. This oral vaccine, called “ADCO” (for Adeno-Coli), is made from the antigens of E.coli. It is not a drug, and it is not a bacterial agent, but what it will do is act like a sieve in our birds’ blood stream, eliminating the E.coli bacteria and identifying the carriers of Adeno Virus. From what we are being told, an average of one out of every forty pigeons may die from the treatment, but those that die are the carriers, so that the loft will be undergoing a constant culling, so to speak, of those birds that could re-infect the entire flock. Since a pigeon’s body does a complete blood replacement within its system every four to six weeks, it is advised that this oral vaccine be given in six-week intervals. Of course, such a treatment plan may not be for everyone, but the really serious fanciers would do well to consider such a plan, as the disease carriers will be constantly eliminated.

Anyone reading this information should be thinking about the big picture, and what the signs are telling us is that we should be more and more conscious of culling our pigeons based on one very important piece of information–the resistance to disease. In our lofts, for years now, we have had a policy in which all babies that are not shipped to futurities, or that are not placed in the racing lofts, are put into large aviary lofts and are given vitamins and supplements, along with Health Gard, but absolutely no medication. They go four to five months before we even vaccinate them. The weak ones eliminate themselves. The strong ones tell us that their immune system is active and working well.

Breed From Leaders Part 3 – Breeding is a Numbers Game

Beside excellent health, single tossing your birds is the best way to create and teach mental maturity, intelligence and to evaluate your breeders. If young are lost frequently from certain breeders in these single tosses, cull the breeder. It is of no value to you.

Buying Pigeons? Do Your Homework First Part 2

YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE AN INVESTMENT TO OBTAIN THESE BIRDS. YOU EXPECT TO PAY A FAIR PRICE. YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, SELECTIVE BREEDING, HEAVY CULLING AND POSSIBLY LARGE EXPENSE ON THE SELLER’S PART TO ACHIEVE HIS SUCCESS. IN SOME CASES, A SELLER SPENDS A LIFETIME OF WORK AND DEDICATION ON HIS BIRDS AND REPUTATION. HE KNOWS HIS BIRDS, SO LET HIM SELECT THEM FOR YOU, AND ADVISE YOU ON POSSIBLE MATINGS. BREED THEM AS A FAMILY FOR AT LEAST 2-3 YEARS. DO NOT CROSS THEM WITH OTHER BIRDS. YOU CAN UNDO A LIFETIME OF WORK IN ONE MATING OR BREEDING SEASON. YOU WILL BE ASKING HIM TO SELECT 6-10 BIRDS FOR YOU. PRICES WILL VARY FROM FANCIER TO FANCIER. THEY SHOULD RANGE FROM A LOW OF $50 EACH TO A HIGH OF $300 EACH FOR BIRDS THAT RANGE FROM 30 DAYS TO 1 YEAR OLD. PROVEN BREEDERS AND RECORD BIRDS WILL BE A GREAT DEAL HIGHER. YOU WANT TO OBTAIN THE PROVEN BLOODLINES, SO BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF THE RECORD BIRDS ARE FINE. IF THOSE BIRDS HAVE PRODUCED GENERATION AFTER GENERATION THE BLOODLINES WILL PROVE THEMSELVES FOR YOU.

Brad if the members of this forum think I'm in the wrong then have a Poll and I will "Remove" myself, Because we can all agree that there will be no "Culling"....

    Hi Louie,

I'm sorry that you're upset about your post being edited, I apologize that it happened. I never saw your posting before it was edited so it's hard for me to comment fully. All I know is that Ed did what he thought was right at the time and he certainly didn't mean to upset or pick on you. Ed's intentions are always honest and decent. It's not easy being a moderator on a forum and things can and do get misinterpreted. We are all human and we all do things less than perfectly every time.

The moderators do reserve the right to edit or delete any posts at any time that they find objectionable or go against our policies. I'm not saying your post was, but it got edited this time. Situations like this are rare on this forum, so let's just try to move past this one incident. Smile

    Beautifully and diplomatically spoken, Brad!

Actually, this whole bruhaha was entirely my fault! I made a comment after Louie's post about the "cull" word and something to the effect that you would not approve.

Ed picked up on it and one thing led to another. I wish I could remember my exact words, but they were removed...*sigh* I probably should have kept my mouth shut.

I take full responsibility and offer very humble apologies.

    Love and Hugs
