    Need Lovebird Advice!

Post  coolpige on Thu Oct 14, 2010 6:44 pm

Hi to all. I had a thread recently about my babysitting for my friend, Jean's, lovebirds...Peggy and Rosie, while she had bypass surgery. All are doing well. Jean recevied a call from the local pet shop she deals with and the owner told her he is closing the store. He has one female, 3 month old lovebird left and no one wants her. Jean said "I'd love to have her". I have a cat and so I cannot take the baby in. I will pick her up tomorrow and take her to the avian vet for a check-up. Of course, we will get a new cage, etc. Can anyone advise the best way to introduce the new gal into the house. Should her cage be near Peggy and Rosie? All advise is appreciated, as well as suggestions for a name Thanks....

I dont know much about lovebirds but I wanna say just about every one I have seen has always hate a mate with it.
I think they get sick if they are alone too long.
I might be totally wrong Smile

Just keep the cages side by side and things should be fine. The 2 older LBs may accept the baby into the ''flock'' as I believe you told us they are both females. I wouldn't put them in the same cage until you are certain they will all get along, and certainly NOT until the baby is grown. By that time you will be sure it is not a male as a male will cause trouble with the older pair, not to mention ....BABIES!!!!! If your friend decides to get a cagemate for the baby...... do it soon so they can grow up together.

Hi Ed. My friend decided last night to get another female for the new arrival. She called another store and they have one only 2 1/2 mos. old. Today, another friend who drives will take us around and get 2 lovebirds, cages, etc cheers

    Hi Mariah,
Jean decided on a cagemate, last night, as mentioned in reply to Ed, above. Jean is still recuperating and so , since I don't drive, another friend is taking me around to get both kids cheers

    Hi to All:

The new arrival from the pet shop that was closing is now with Jean. cheers
She has been named Lillie. The other youngster was sold from the other pet shop. The important thing is that no one wanted Lillie and the shop closed its doors , today and she is in a loving home. Jean had thought a cagemate would be good for her, but it didn't work out. As Mariah had said, Lillie's cage is next to the other girls and she is getting adjusted. Jean has a great big heart and is just thrilled with her new daughter. I saw her today and she's adorable.

    Welcome Lillie Welcome

    Hi Shi,

Thanks for welcoming my new niece, Lillie. I had her checked at the avian vet and she is in perfect health. The vet also told me that the pet shop was forced to close for filthy conditions Evil or Very Mad To make matters worse, he said the owner probably killed any animals that weren't sold before he closed Twisted Evil
At least a happy ending. Lillie is nervous but she is surrounded, now, with love and care. Jean is a devoted new mother. Peggy and Rosie LB, so far are having a good reaction to her. Their cages are next to each other (THanks Mariah for posting that advice). Lillie has had a bad start in life, but that has all changed now cheers cheers

Many thanks, Hugh. Lillie is getting used to her new home and Mommie Jean, who is now interacting with her on her hand. The older birds, Peggy and Rosie are quite friendly in their adjacent cage. cheers

    Hi.
I wanted to give an update on my friend Jean's lovebirds. I babysat her Peggy and Rosie when she had surgery. After returning, she adopted a 3 mos. old LB from a pet shop that was closing. New gal, Lillie, was in cage next to Peggy and Rosie, and started to seem lonely. Vet told her to bring in piece of toenail for DNA test to make sure Lillie is a girl. She is and so, Jean started to work at putting the 3 together. I'm happy to say that all 3 have been in the same cage for 1 week, now. It's worked out well and Lilli is no longer alone. cheers

Thanks for the very good update Kate. It's always nice to hear when things work out well like this and especially since animal relationships can be quite complicated as well! Wink
