Are all Modena pigeons boat shaped?

Post  weemuck on Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:51 am

    Hi,

I've been looking at sites about Modena pigeons, when I bought my first two pair I was told they were Modenas, None of my pigeons look like the Modena pigeons on the sites. I have posted a number of photos of them in my gallery, in recent pic of the day and in my posts. Could anyone tell me if they are Modena or not?

To my mind they are but maybe not competition grade. The Modena have a great history and I wondered if the breed were once a bit less boat tailed and puffy breasted and that they are specifically tailored by breeders to get to this shape for shows

Some of my birds have a bit of a stickie up tail but none have the big chest that the beak rests on. Any idea's or info any one?

    Regards Neil

P.S. I'm kinda glad they look like they doo, just curious as to why the young lad that sold them to me would say they were if they were something else. I'm sure it's just the show breed versus the common or garden Modena???

I am no expert at this but I believe it would be the show quality to the common maybe mixed hertitage or something.. I have Mookies and some are show quality but I don't show birds but anyway the show quality have a neck and head that slings back real far level with the toe but my mixed ones do not they stand more upright. I also had a qualm about this because I think the bird would be healthier if they stand up right more and its breast feathers would not get so messed up by other birds at the same time. But I guess it is a characteristic that the bird people like and expect and judge on it---that what makes the bird I guess. Don't know much about these things. Also I have other qualms too but I will be good and not go off about them..That pigeon in the picture before this post is such a beautiful colored bird and a beautiful one..c.hert

I wrote the above post too but I just thought of something Weemuck and your egg will hatch soon and I wonder if our Gladys Chardone has any of those real cute emotioncons that would be appropriate for your hatch day. I wish that Brad could have a actual egg hatching at the actual time as the post turns over to the next number---that would be fun---just think more work for him and his friend....Love to see men working and keeps them out of trouble...lol lol c.hert

Hi Weemuck, Yes that's a Modena.I'm not an expert with Modenas, but I have a friend who raised them for a while. They are very beautiful and showy pigeons.
I think that color is called Bronze blue check.
I have always wanted to breed Modenas ,even though here in the north-east there is no real competition .I probably would be the only one at the show with them.
My friend told me that his Modenas were very aggressive. When I went to his loft ,he had them in individual cages.

OOps, Sorry Copper, I know that one is a Modena but it's not mine, I lifted that photo off a web page. My birds look like this.

Yes,They could have Modena blood in them.I have had rollers that looked a lot like them also.
I raised Show Bronze Tipplers for a long time ,but I was always impressed with the way a modena stood, they are so showy.I wanted to put this trate into my Show Tipplers. So I bought a Bronze colored Modena ,and crossed it into my Tipplers.I raised some beautiful Tipplers, but they all had a major fault. They held their tails up.I don't remember how many years I tried to breed this trate out of them(unsuccessfully) ,until I finally gave up and sold them all.Whenever I see a bird that holds it tail up I right away think of my Modenas.

That sure is a pretty pigeon and I have a roller that looks something like him but your bird is larger with larger wings and more high I think as well but the picture is pretty. My particular bird I call saddleback because of the coloring on the saddle part and he is in love with speckles another male and he is on constant guard duty to keep speckles away from all the other males for he is a jealous bird and all the other males love speckles because he has a wide back. So I have quite a time in watching them with their temper tantrums.. Yea Weemuck just like Jax and Paddy wrote you will hatch on your 100th post but I thought it was 50 so you have time until you hatch...All your pictures are really nice including the ones that you photoshopped with like that bee--very pretty....c.hert

Thanks for that Copper, some of my lot, especially Ma, the Scruff and their family hold their tails up a lot so they must have more Modena in them than Snowy's young.

Once I get home I'll take some pics of them sticking up their tales.

Just 49 posts to go then and I'm out of the egg!

    Cheers Neil
