I think thats what they call the egg tooth and is what they use to break out of their egg.

Yes, I also think the "egg tooth" is there so that it is easier for the parents to spot the youngster's mouths in dim conditions for feeding.

Great photos of some of the first of your 2011 YB team! I liked the latest photos the best and the one where the one chick was all covered up by mom. All you could see of it was the tip of it's beak protruding from under her feathers!
