Wild Pigeon with broken wing--just walked into the loft and stayed...

    Post  c.hert on Tue Mar 08, 2011 3:44 pm

Wild pigeon refused to fly out of yard and just walked into the loft and flew up to table and wanted for food and water...It has a broken wing I believe and I am going to make a vet appointment to check it out and see if we can strap it so it heals the right way if it can. The vet can check for other things too....Can't release it because of the wing and it refuses to fly just wants to eat and rest and drink which is fine by me...Acts like its been here before---I can almost touch it....very calm...tooooo calm... I love you I love you

I brought the pigeon into the house and its in a large cage with food and water at this point and I am observing it..It's body temperature did not feel right to me---too cool and light----...needs a few good meals..seems to be very content,??? I love you flower I examined the wing and its low hanging but could not find a break in it but I am no expert and the vet will....It does not appear to have Canker but I am wondering about worms because it is so light feeling and kind of cracky as well...It will go to the vet on Thursday if weather holds out.... I love you flower

    Appointment is Thursday at 2pm..

Named the pigeon "Birdie" and she is doing fine...(I think she is a she) but not sure as of yet..She eats and drinks and relaxes really well and acts like she likes music. Very calm pigeon this one----tooooo calm..., not sure about this...Tomorrow I will start fooling with her to see how calm she really is but don't want to disturb her tonight and she is sound asleep and looks real comfry. Had a real good meal and settled in for the night and went to sleep..??? Everything is good.. I love you sunny

That's great c hert, how about putting her in an unused room and turning the heating on in there high? After all, you wouldn't like to be cold.

Glad you are looking after her, try feeding her rice and peas if you want to,
    she might prefer that.

^ shouldn't be on new paragraph.

I have a very tiny house my forum friend and she is eating some mixed seed and very happy and seems normal in all ways except her wing and that will be check out on Thursday by the vet. It's a lot higher today (the wing) and this "Birdie" seems to have nothing wrong with her (I think) at the moment.. Clean birdie and droppings are normal and she acts more like someones pet than a wild bird.
Thanks for the advice and under different circumstances rice and peas would have been good but not this particular scenerio. You must read threads in this forum and learn more about pigeons my friend and people in the forum can certainly help you. Down the road maybe you might want to get into racing pigeons...or show pigeons or maybe you might be put in a situation to save a pigeon thats having bad luck. The first thing you do when you find a stray bird is to isolate it and secure it so nothing will hurt it and observe it to figure out its problem... as well as getting it warm so that it does not use up its strength with trying to stay warm when it might be sick..Thanks for the advice my friend... I love you flower

This is the strangest problem that I have ever had....this pigeon is perfectly healthy now in all aspects and its wing is now raised in proper position. It's a young bird and is very famaliar with cages and just walking to lofts and jumping up on tables and eating right in front of you. This bird might have been hand raised and was just very very hungry and thirsty for it has come a long way now with new energy. I don't know yet about trying to release it for it is "Just tooo friendly" and very relaxed around me....?????Really a problem here but I am going to have a fecal float done by the vet to see if it has any parasites but I don't think so....and "Birdie" is cleaning herself and resting and eating and seems to be really relaxed about the "whole process"..she does seem more like someones pet pigeon than anything else or maybe raised by people and released and could not feed herself????? Never had this problem before....What do I do with her?? Can.t release her just yet....and she seems to be doing just excellent... I love you I love you flower

Perhaps c.hert your reputation for caring for pigeons has become more well known and someone tired of raising a pet pigeon has thrown it over into your yard, hurting it's wing in the process.

I have a pretty good idea how this is going to end up. Any one care to guess? I bet we all are on the same page. Congratulations c.hert.

    Congratulations C. Hert! Very Happy

Well it really is up to you but I think that bird really likes your place and wants to stay. They know a good home when they see one. Probably was just fooling you all along with the wing bit just to get inside.

I will take this day by day and after the vet visit tomorrow I will leave her fly free in the bird room just to assess the situation further. I thought about what you said Maniac about someone throwing her in the yard for food and water or maybe to release her back to the wild--and I keep such a low profile I don't think many people know that I even have pigeons..I never saw this wild pigeon before and at least can't remember her among the winter feeding ones. Her tail has a while area on the back of it and I really don't remember a pigeon like that among the birdies..My vet has told me many times that he thinks these pigeons are putting out the word and he always asks me: "How did you get this one"? I then just look at him and tell him the story for his records..I have a lot of medical files there and he getting to the point where I guess he laughs and thinks: "Here we go again". Now I need to tell him that I tried to chase this one out of my yard but he refused to leave and just walked into my loft as I was cleaning it and flew up on the table and started pecking around for food and I gave him food and water and his wing looked broken (hanging lower) so I kept him just to check him or her out. Her name is "Birdie". Then I think I will thank him for the Parakeet he gave me and tell him that bird is doing wonderful and its name is "Chancey" for the file record on it....In the meantime I have come home from work and this "Birdie" has eaten and wash herself and now is settling down to go to sleep for the night..perfectly relaxed and acts like it is home.. ROTFL Everything is fine and I will update again tomorrow with what the vet thinks about this situation. Pigeon is wonderful. I love you flower

Thanks everybody and I think that everyone of you need a new pigeon in your house especially that Garye and everybody who posted .. This pigeon is willing to fly anywhere for I asked it if it was up to this and it prefers to fly to a nice persons house instead of going to the vet....You really need another one Jax and Paddy and Gnuretiree and Maniac you could use one too and this one has plenty of relatives...I will keep you updated about "our lovely Birdie"... ROTFL YESS! I love you
