I seen this posted by a Member of another FL, Chatgroup I'm a member of... and thought it was worthy of posting here...! Its a poll thats being conducted by a local Website in NJ... Daily poll: Is pigeon racing inhumane?

"IF WE CAN'T EDUCATE NON PIGEON PEOPLE,WE MUST SILENCE THE IGNORANT. FOR MANY YEARS NOW WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO BRING THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF PIGEONS BACK TO THE RESPECT THAT THEY ONCE HAD AND DESERVE.THE INTERNET HAS HELPED BUT OVERALL WE NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB. "TAKING ON TYSON" MAY BE THE JUMPSTART THAT WE NEED.IT MAY GIVE US A PLATFORM TO BE HEARD BY THE MASSES. HOLLYWOOD MAY BE ABLE TO DO IN A SHORT TIME WHAT WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DO FOR DECADES. WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER & TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY".

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Louie!

Personally, I don't feel that pigeon racing is inhumane. These pigeons were designed for, meant to fly and their homing ability is innate. These birds are doing exactly what nature intended them to do and that is to be able to fly long distances and find their way back home to their nesting sites, mates and/or 'home'.

Unlike horse racing or dog racing, pigeon racing doesn't make the birds do things that they are not already capable of or have an instinct for. There is NO PRESSURE, human influence or cruelty involved. Once the birds are let loose and airborne, it's totally up to them how fast they fly, what route they take and how strong their desire to get home is. Some might argue that this in itself is 'mean' or 'unnatural' but....racing/homing pigeons have a long history of adapting and overcoming obstacles. I personally believe that this actually makes the their innate ability stronger and work faster than it would naturally.

So and for this poll, I've voted "no", it's not inhumane and added our own poll to this discussion.

    Brad
