    MY FIRST OOPS BABY EVER!!!!!!!!!

Post  Lovebirds on Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:39 pm

Oh my goodness..........I almost had a heart attack this morning. I went to get Scooter and Dory's water and feed to change it. Dory STAYS on eggs, so I keep a bowl of feed right by her side along with another bowl for Scooter. So anyway, I opened the back of the coop to get Dory's bowl and THERE WAS A LITTLE YELLOW FUZZY IN THE BOWL!!!!! affraid I used to pull thier eggs and give them dummy eggs, but their eggs were never fertile, so I quit pulling them. That back fired on me. The second egg was clear, so I now have one teeny tiny baby that is 1/2 homer 1/2 Satinette. I can already see that the little beak is like Scooters. I've just taken a couple of pictures which Scooter wasn't too happy about. I'll get them posted.

I have been too........all morning.........I just hope they'll take care of it good. I'll keep an eye on it for sure. I've got 4 different sets of hens sitting on dummy eggs, so I'll move it if I need to. I hope I don't have to though. Dory was so proud this morning. It hadn't been long hatched and it was in front of her when I opened the back of the coop, like she was saying......."Look what WE did Mom!" and after I saw it and said "Oh my God Dory" a few times, she got back on top of it. Then I looked a little later and Scooter was in the bowl. This was about 10:00 and he NEVER pulls egg duty that early. When I went out to take the pictures, he gave me the "what for".........but I think they're both happy to finally have a baby after having all the duds...........can't wait to see what it's going to look like and what color it will be............. Woo Hoo

OMG Renee, I can just imagine your surprise. What a little adorable bit of yellow fuzz that baby is with it's perfect little beak. Welcome to the world little guy. I just got here, computer is cranky this am, and read this right off the bat. I'm grinning too. Congratulations to the proud parents. WE ARE NEVER GOING TO GET TIRED OF PICTURES.

I've just been watching them with the camera zoomed in. Scooter has been on the nest for most of the day and he won't let Dory get on the nest. He keeps running her away. I knew he was a proud Daddy, but................ Rolling Eyes

I wish my Eggbert was as good a dad. Razz Not that it matters and because I'm not letting them breed. However, Eggberts' idea of sitting on eggs is sitting BESIDE them about 8 inches away. He almost never actually sits on the eggs! lol! affraid He never used to be like this but in the last couple of years he just can't seem to get a handle on what to do, or doesn't care. lol.

Hopefully Scooter will allow Dory on the nest but maybe he'll choose to do all the sitting. Wink

At 5:30 I finally went out and pulled Scooter off of the baby and held him until Dory got on the nest. I honestly don't know if he REALLY didn't want to get off of the baby, or thought he wasn't supposed to because it's actually a baby now instead of an egg. I've never seen a pair of birds act like this before. Dory had finally stopped even trying to get on the nest and was sitting on a perch. I didn't want her to loose interest, so I MADE them switch shifts............guess we'll see how it goes tomorrow. I did get a good look at the baby though (didn't have the darn camera with me Rolling Eyes ), and it looks like it's getting fed and being taken good care of. Just hope that continues...........

Sounds like Christmas came early this year, Renee. I can't wait to see how the little thing looks when he is grown up.

Yea, me too. I read an article last year about a fancier who had a Satinette in his loft as a dropper. Apparently it was the daddy to one of his racers babies because one of them had the beak like the Satinettes. He actually banded and flew that bird in the races. It flew a 300 mile race. Didn't win anything, but it made the trip. I won't be doing that, but thought it was interesting anyway.

Will you be able to loft fly the bird? I would assume you could, but didn't know for sure.

I'm sure I could break it to the loft and let it fly around here. Have to wait and see about that though. I actually broke Scooter to the loft and had him trapping, but was never brave enough to let him outside. If he had flown away or a hawk got him, I'd be pretty upset........not a chance I was willing to take. Rolling Eyes

So........Scooter is back to his tricks this morning. At 6:30 Dory was on the baby. At 8:30, Scooter was on it and has been ever since. He refuses to leave that baby. Shocked I guess Dory must have gotten off to poop or get a drink of water and he was "johnny on the spot"............LOL
Here's todays pictures. The baby is a little over 24 hours old now. Very Happy

Hi Renee! Sounds like Scooter is doing his daddy duties quite well! I remember that Peter Pied Piper, my ASU pij, even when he had a mate, would be doing his early day daddy duties dutifully! (say THAT 6 times!) hilarious

I am SURE glad you DON'T let Scooter out to free fly! affraid IF something ever happened to that cutie, I would be devastated...along with tons of other people...including yourself!

Continuing double duty love, hugs and scritches to the happy family and you as "godperson!" Wink

Hi Renee...at least you can't say that Scooter is a dead beat dad! Razz;) Poor fella, I find it cute that he doesn't want to leave his baby alone but I also understand your concern that Dory might lose interest if he never gets off the nest for a shift change. Sure is a bit of an odd situation though. The latest pictures are sweet. Smile

Well, Scooter's mad at me. Rolling Eyes It's 4:00 almost and he wasn't budging.........I pulled him off the baby and Dory was on that nest in no time flat. Poor Momma............. Sad she loves the baby too.
I had to laugh at Scooter, he had crop milk all over his beak and the baby looked like it was ready to pop!! Very Happy
My race birds take care of their babies and pull their duty when it's time, but I can say, I've never ever seen a bird this devoted to it's baby. Not even my hens........it's quite funny.......
