    Birmingham roller pigeons

Post  wila on Sat Jan 14, 2012 5:23 pm

hi members i am a complete novice to the site and was just wondering how other roller/tumbler breeders go about pairing up, personally I tend to pair deep rolling birds to shallower more frequent rollers also i like to balance my colours as ive heard that variations in colour can affect there depth in the role and technique

    thank

    Welcome to the forum.
I personally dont know much about rollers but I would guess color wouldn't have much effect on performance.
Hopefully a member who has rollers can chime in Very Happy

The person that I am looking for is an excellent person who knows a whole bunch about rollers for they been in it for a long time..They have a website but I cannot remember their full name to get their e-mail and ask for help...I was always very impressed with their knowledge...So for now I have to just say look up National Birmingham Roller Club and see what you come up with wila and in the meanwhile welcome to the forum..We talk about all kinds of animals here and there is a nice supply of knowledge concerning our loved pigeons as well... There is a introduction area under the home icon and tell us something about yourself and it is there where you will be welcome by everyone.. In the meanwhile I am trying to locate a person with a name beginning with 4y----something...and if any of the members knows who I might be talking about let me have their full handle so that I can contact them and request their wonderful help for wila's questions about rollers...."just can't remember to look it up" .gosh I am feeling old but young.... I love you sunny .

Hi Wila , I've been flying different types of pigeons for many years, in 1990 I started with Rollers. I had them until 03, and at that time had to sell them because of health issues. I've never found color (body or eye color) to make a difference in their performance. I've been very fortunate to have friends give me matted pairs (of all different color's) ,that produced quality rollers. If you have a pair of rollers that breeds you 100% keepers (click pairs) , you should NEVER break them up. Use their offspring as stock birds. I would never break up a pair and try again. Getting the genes to line up in such a way that nearly all of the young possess them in the right order, for good rolling is very difficult to get.
I think that the shape of the wing to be more important. When I look at a rollers wing, I look for long primaries, the last four should be narrow the full length of the shaft. The secondaries should be shorter than the primaries and angled toward the body, not so long as to overlap the body when the wing is closed, wing butts pronounced. Hope this help's

I have always breed only birds that will kit well in the air #1 if they dont kit even though they are great rollers I will not use that bird for breeding! #2 if they roll great and kit and dont crash pull it out and put it with the same for breeding. Putting a deep roller with control with a roller that is shallow only makes the roll shorter! Even if they are related that dosnt matter, you want to breed only the best and color isnt an issue! I never breed for color in rollers, Homers I have been known to do that! I hope this helps.

The problem is i live on an large estate so the birds need to be less inclined to roll at low altitude but i'v managed to half control this by flying shallower but more frequent birds this seems to work well, and thanks mate for the advise anymore advice and tips would be great to share

If you live on a place that large then I would concentrate on flying at a height that you can still see the birds, but not like high flyer that you cant see unless your using binoculars!!! If you do this you can get 40 ft rolls that are very enjoyable to watch. My birds will fly 30-40 minutes and come in. The reason for this is that they are atheletes in the air and working as hard as they possibly can. Thats all I can ever ask of them. Everybody i have ever talked to about how they train thier birds is always different. So it is al lways up to the owner as to how he or she wants out of thier birds.

I have white selfs, Black Knights, red, black, and yellow saddles and white bar homers, and I also raise rollers and arabian trumpters. This past year my nephew and I remodeled the loft added three kit boxes and another nesting area all in a 12x20 building. I will add Pic as soon as I have time! I am a caregiver for my motherinlaw who had a stroke and is now living with us. About the only tme I have to get on here is very early or about now after she goes to bed. I do white bird releases also not often! But a few!

I do try yo stay busy, it really all depends on the weather here as to what I will be doing theat day. If it is raining or a hundred miles out I know it!!!!!! On those days I am confined to the lazyboy! if the weather is clear then so am I. The days I cant get out my nephew does the chores he lives with me also, out of work and cant find work. He is 30 and has a few problems of his own, my wife and I do have a full plate. I also write childrens books, and I have written 1 novel but havent had the funds to have it published as of yet. I believe you have to put forth an effort in life to ever accomplish anything! When I was about 16 a older man told me " everyday learn something, regardless of what it is, but at the end of the day stop and think if you did or not, if not then sit down and read until you do!!!!!! " I have done that all my life since then, just think that 365 bits of knowledge that you will learn each year. I am so thankfull that he shared that with me. He has passed now but I still think of him often. Because of him I have a number of books that is quiet extenive!

As far as my back I have had 5 nerosurgens tell me that surgery would only have a 25% chance of working and that there is the possiblity of being parlized so I guess I am the way I am until my time comes and then I look forward to running and jumping again!!

Thanks to all of you for being helpful in getting me started in this site!!
