    Colors to mix with white?

    Post  Utah123 on Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:14 pm

I have four pure white pigeons. But since I don't do weddings I was thinking about getting a pigeon with a diffenent color base to mix with the whites. 2 of my four are a pair. And the other two are both cocks so I was thinking about getting a hen for one of them. How do you make a grizzle coloring?

Do your white birds have black eyes, or another color? Your whites may actually be grizzles, which would make it a lot easier. If not, you'll have to get a grizzle to make a grizzle.

Well from your avatar they do look black. In that case it isn't grizzle causing the white, but rather something like pied/splash gone to the extreme, or recessive white. So back to what I said, grizzle mates would be best if that's what you want Very Happy

Yeah, I think they are black or a dark blue or something. If I mixed them with like a blue bar what do you think would happen. Would the blue bar have more domince over the white?

I have seen pics of pure white and black mixed and that made a pigeon that kind of had coloring like a cow  !

But the guy I bought them from said that they were pure white.

If you mated them to a blue bar, chances are you'll end up with blues (or possibly red, if that's what the recessive white is covering up) and probably some pied or splashed birds.

Gotta have the grizzle gene to make a grizzle. If the grizzle gene is present, the bird looks grizzled. So it's really easy to tell if they have it, haha. Heterozygous birds will look salt and peppered, but homozygous grizzles will be almost or all white. Here's what you should expect from pairings

They look good, but I would think it would look cool if there was a blue bar with white splashed into it.

Well then get your whites some blue mates and see what happens Very Happy
Chances are pretty high that you'll get a splashed BB.

Yeah! Very Happy Pigeon genetics are kind of exciting.

So how are pure whites grizzles. And if they are wouldn't they pass down that gene?

Most pure white grizzles have orange eyes, not black. They are homozygous grizzles, so they carry two genes for it. So yes, they will pass it down if that happened to be what they are. In fact, if one parent is a 'white grizzle', all babies will be grizzled, but will be normal colored grizzles, not white. Putting two white grizzles together gets you babies that look like they do Smile
