How long do I let a pair of pigeons sit on fake eggs before I remove them and let them try to lay another set of eggs?

Hi Ed,
I was just beginning to wonder where you and Carol have been all day.
It's best to let the pair sit on the fake eggs for as long as they want to, they will abandon them when they are ready. It's usually anywhere from 3 weeks to a month. Mine sit for about 3.5 weeks before they leave them. It's good to allow them to abandon the eggs on their own so that they don't lay again any sooner than necessary.

Oh ok....
Well, how long has it been since they laid their infertile eggs and now on these fake eggs?

Hi Carol....
I actually wasn't making a joke but I can see how you might have thought that,
I'm not usually that witty or quick.

It's ok to take them now. They should lay again in about 8 to 10 days.

Re: How long to let sit on fake eggs
Well, when you're dealing with your breeders, that for the most part only lay eggs a few months out of the year, it doesn't hurt anything to take their eggs and let them lay more.
We don't recommend that of course for the "pet" birds that lay constantly. The longer in between laying, the better for them.
I've always heard that the birds should sit on the eggs for 10 days before you remove them. Not sure why exactly......but that's what I've heard.

Re: How long to let sit on fake eggs
poor things
I removed the fake eggs today and they were so confused
they would go out and come back into the nest box
I think they were looking for their eggs and leaving and coming back would make them return

Aww! Poor things! I know what you mean! I have seen the look on a birds face when you remove their eggs. You feel so sorry for them....just as I do when they sit for weeks on sterile eggs knowing that they are never gonna hatch.
