    Another PMV1 vaccination question.

Post  EgypSwiftLady on Sun May 18, 2008 10:37 am

[b] Hello everyone, I've got a question for anyone who might have the answer.

Since I am vaccinating all birds, pigeons/rn doves, for PMV1 should I wait to vaccinate the pair with babies? Question I'm thinking yes but just want to know if I'm right. Smile

    Thanks,
    Robin.

    Hi Robin,

Yes, definitely hold off with the PMV vaccinations with your birds with babies...your thinking was right.

Thanks Brad, I've also want to vaccinate for pox, can I do both vaccinations in the same week or should I do one and wait a month to do the other? Question

    Hi Robin,

I would stagger the vaccinations if I were you. You could probably do both at the same time but I feel that stuff like that should be spaced apart and so not to overburden the birds.

Robin, we always PMV and Pox our birds at the same time. I guess it depends on how many birds you have. By the time we do ours, we're vaccinating around 100 birds. It's just simpler and easier to do both at one sitting and get it over with. It won't hurt them to do it all at once. Now if you plan on vaccinating for Paratyphoid too, we DON"T do all three at the same time. We wait a couple of weeks and then vaccinate for Paratyphoid

Thanks Brad & Lovebirds for your replies. We only have 11 birds to do but doing both vaccinations at one time would be sooo much easier, with work and caring for all the other animals time is a big issue aoround here.
As they say theres, only 24 hours in a day and ya gotta use a couple of those for sleep! lol!

Have you poxed birds before? Just asking because, with the other vaccines, you can do one bird today and one next week, etc.........with Pox, you need to do ALL the birds at the same time and not allow ANY unvaccinated birds to mingle or be around the ones that have been poxed for at least 30 days. Just didn't know if you were aware of that or not.

No problem. And since this is your first time vaccinating.........once you pox them, don't allow them any bath water for 30 days. The vaccination site will become a little sore and scab over. If allowed in water, then it can be spread to thier eyes and such. For the month after I vaccinate, I get out the water hose and spray them. It scares them at first, but once they realize it's only water, they come out in the aviary and just love to have the water "raining" down on them.
